News Briefs: The CW Bumps Up the Premieres of The Originals and The Vampire Diaries

… Right after we all got our premiere dates schedules embossed on sheet metal with goldleaf lettering, The CW went ahead and changed things up. Ugh. Hoping to give its new Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals a bit of a push out the door, the network has moved the premiere of the Klaus-centric series from Tuesday, October 15 at 8pm to Thursday, October 3 at 9pm. BUT WHY!?!?!? Because The CW is also shifting the season premiere of The Vampire Diaries to that same day (one week earlier than it was originally scheduled to air), and if enough of TVD‘s viewers stick around for The Originals, the network is hoping that maybe they’ll follow The Originals to its regular time slot on Tuesdays at 8pm, where it will return with Episode 2 on October 8.

Then, that second episode of The Originals will air as a repeat on Thursday, October 10 at 9pm, after a new episode of The Vampire Diaries. It’s no coincidence that The CW is trying to give The Originals all the help it can, since the show has the unfortunate task of airing opposite ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., one of the season’s most-anticipated new shows and one that will draw some of the same audience as The Originals. All the switcheroos mean that Supernatural will also premiere a week early, on Tuesday, October 8 at 9pm, where it’s paired with The Originals. Meanwhile, Reign keeps its original premiere date of October 17 at 9pm, after The Vampire Diaries. But Now we have to wonder whether The CW is already regretting not putting The Vampire Diaries and The Originals together. [The CW via press release]

… CBS is also tinkering with its premiere schedule, fattening up its debut Thursday with back-to-back episodes of The Big Bang Theory from 8pm to 9pm on September 26. This is designed to help launch new comedy The Crazy Ones, which stars Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar as a father-daughter advertising team and airs immediately afterward, at 9pm. With an extra Bang, new comedy The Millers gets bumped back a week. [CBS via press release]

… The Disney Channel has done good and thrown out a second-season renewal for Gravity Falls, the animated series in which Jason Ritter and Kristen Schaal voice a brother-and-sister duo who encounter all sorts of abnormalities in the mysterious town of Gravity Falls. It’s good. Give it a shot. [Disney Channel via press release]

… Cartoon Network has canceled its Nick Cannon sketch-show Incredible Crew. [Variety]

Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice and her husband Joe have been charged with 39 counts of fraud for tax evasion, bank fraud, and a whole lotta other weaselly things. If convicted, the couple could face up to 50 years in prison.  [TMZ]

… Lifetime’s Devious Maids continues to impress. The soap hit a series high of 2.9 million viewers in its sixth episode, bucking the downward trend that most shows experience. It’s almost guaranteed to nab a second season, which should be announced any day now. The series, from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry, was originally set up at ABC, which passed on it and is probably kicking itself for doing so. [Lifetime via press release]

… Unofficial news: The 24 miniseries 24: Live Another Day will debut next April, according to executive producer Howard Gordon. [Assignment X]

… NBC has canceled Fashion Star. [THR]

… This is kinda casting, so I’ll put it here. Fresh out of rehab, Lindsay Lohan will guest-host E!’s Chelsea Lately on August 5 (Lohan is scheduled to be free on July 31). There’s no word on who will be the interview guest that night, but E! is calling it an “all-star” event. . [Deadline Hollywood]

… CBS’s upcoming drama Hostages has impeached its First Lady! Kate Burton (Scandal) originally appeared in the pilot of the conspiracy thriller as the president’s wife, but will now be replaced by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (Grimm). The series stars Toni Collette as a surgeon whose family is held hostage and won’t be freed unless she kills the president in surgery and how in the world is this going to be a full-on TV series? [TV Line]

… And your hosts for the 2013 Teen Choice Awards are… Glee‘s Darren Criss and Pretty Little Liars‘ Lucy Hale! You may exhale now. The Teen Choice Awards will air on Fox on August 11, a.k.a. Breaking Bad Day. [Fox via press release]

… Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black has upgraded Danielle Brooks, who plays Taystee, to series regular for Season 2. The women’s prison dramedy has also added Lorraine Toussaint (The Fosters) as Vee, a former drug dealer who—I’m going to go out on a limb here—ends up in prison, I assume. [Deadline Hollywood]

… Regina King will return to The Big Bang Theory as the university’s director of human resources. When? We don’t know because CBS didn’t say. [THR]

… Carrie Preston is returning to The Good Wife next season, reprising her role as Elsbeth Tascioni. Preston, who also has roles on True Blood and Person of Interest, will be back for multiple episodes. [TV Line]

… John Lithgow will be back to play Barney’s dad in the final season of How I Met Your Mother. [THR]
