What to Watch Tonight: Last Resort, The Big Bang Theory, and Elementary
What to watch on Thursday, September 27…

SERIES PREMIERE, 8pm, ABC
Last Resort
In “Captain” we meet the crew on board a U.S. submarine who receive a mysterious order to fire nuclear weapons at a foreign country even though there has been no declaration of war. When the captain and his crew refuse orders, they become subject to attacks—by their own countrymen—and so seek refuge on an exotic island near where their ship has been hit. Not a bad set up for a season which will undoubtedly make you question who in the U.S. is behaving so badly and why.
SEASON 6 PREMIERE, 8pm, CBS
The Big Bang Theory
America’s #1 comedy isback tonight with “The Date Night Variable.” In it Wolowitz gets launched into outer-space, but for some reason still gets caught in the middle of an argument between Bernadette and his mother. Oh, bother! Also, Raj starts to catch the lonely bug after realizing that all of his friends are dating. Poor guy—get a girlfriend.
SEASON 9 PREMIERE, 9pm, ABC
Grey’s Anatomy
“Going, Going, Gone” opens just after the tragic plane crash that rocked last season’s big finale. While the doctors do their best to deal with the fallout from the crash, they must also confront a serious loss that will forever change the course of their lives. Ahhh, it’s so emotional already!
SERIES PREMIERE, 10pm, CBS
Elementary
CBS’s modern day take on an old story comes with an added twist: In this rendition of Sherlock Holmes, Watson is a woman (a woman played by Lucy Liu, to be exact). Recovering addict Sherlock Holmes has a knack for solving the NYPD’s crimes throughout New York City, and while this pleases the feds a great deal, Holmes’s father isn’t so trusting of Holmes’s talents—and so he hires a one Ms. Joan Watson to accompany Sherlock and make sure he doesn’t fall back to addiction. When she assists the eccentric Sherlock through a home-invasion investigation, she’s hooked on crime-solving. And so begins a beautiful friendship. It’s elementary! Literally!
SEASON 3 FINALE, 10pm, FX
Louie
There isn’t much to say about this, except for: It’s the final episode of what has been a fantastic season of comedy television and as such we should all watch it. In “New Year’s Eve,” after coming off of his minor win from last week, Louie gets thrust into the holiday season—and they weigh very heavily on poor Louie.
News Briefs: The CW Renews Oh Sit! and Breaking Pointe Because It’s The CW

BAD BUSINESS TIME
… Usually a network that sends out a release to announce a show renewal can’t wait to tout the numbers the program put up. There was barely a digit in today’s email from The CW announcing the renewal of reality garbage shows Oh Sit! and Breaking Pointe, which is a pretty telling sign that whoever is driving this car might be asleep. Oh Sit!, in case you forgot, is the extreme musical chairs reality competition that’s part Wipeout, part people sitting down; Breaking Pointe is a reality docu-series filmed at a ballet company in Utah. I was able to track down both shows’ numbers, and they’re even more dismal than I thought. Oh Sit! has averaged a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demo and has fallen below one million viewers more often than not. Breaking Pointe was even worse, tip-toeing its way to an average under-a-0.3 rating and bottoming out with 0.62 million viewers. So yeah, The CW renewed them both. Absolutely baffling. [The CW via press release]
REGULAR BUSINESS TIME
… Now THIS! THIS MAKES SENSE! TLC has ordered more episodes of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, the overnight sensation about a group of subhumans living in the magical world of Georgia. The exact number of episodes has not been disclosed, but I’m assuming it will go on as long as there’s enough deep-fried EZ-cheese to go around. TLC has also ordered three Boo Boo holiday specials for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Honey Boo Boo has averaged 2.3 million viewers per episode, which is like a whole season’s worth of Breaking Pointe. [TLC via press release]
… Fox’s much-heralded new comedies Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project debuted last night and the ratings were simply adorkable! As in, kinda okay but not like super hot or anything. Ben and Kate drew 4.2 million viewers for a 2.0 rating, and Mindy followed New Girl with a 4.7 million and a 2.4 rating. Meanwhile, CBS’s Vegas looks oh-so CBS-like, pulling in a whopping 14.7 million viewers and a relatively small 2.5 rating in the 18-49 demo. [EW]
… NBC has picked up a couple more projects, this time from super producer Greg Berlanti. Napa is described as a Wuthering Heights clone but set in modern-day California wine country. Family Affair is about a pair of Connecticut families that meet under auspicious circumstances: the mother from one family and the father from the other were both killed in an accident, exposing a secret affair. Oops! [THR]
… NBC (geez, do these guys just buy everything?) is also developing a period-piece crime drama about a young Thomas Edison, probably because Sherlock Holmes was already taken. Yes, it’s called Edison. [Deadline Hollywood]
CASTING NEWS
… The next white guy to speed-date in front of America on The Bachelor will be… Sean Lowe! Lowe was featured on the most recent season of The Bachelorette, but was sent home by Emily Maynard in favor of some other white guy. Which white woman will he choose next year? [E! Online]
… Malcolm in the Middle mom Jane Kaczmarek will guest-star on The Middle as a teacher at career college that Frankie’s attending. Middle! [THR]
… The CW is continuing its relationship with the U.S. Olympic Committee and has cast nonplussed gymnast McKayla Maroney on Hart of Dixie. Maroney will play a friend of Rose’s, and the actress who plays Rose is named McKaley Miller so I’m really excited for all the giggling that will go on when people call out their names. The CW recently cast Maroney’s fellow gymnast Gabby Douglas on The Vampire Diaries in a tiny role, and also let swimmer Ryan Lochte out of his cage so he could run around the set of 90210. [E! Online]
SAD NEWS
… Singer Andy Williams, the host of NBC’s 1960s variety show The Andy Williams Show, passed away today at the age of 84. [NY Times]

The Good Wife Swears In West Wing’s Stockard Channing as Alicia’s Mom
Who’s ready for a grandma showdown at the Florrick house?
Emmy and Tony winner Stockard Channing has been cast as Alicia’s mom on The Good Wife, TVGuide.com has confirmed.
Channing, 68, will appear in at least one episode later this year as the good wife’s “mercurial” parent who is influenced by her 1960s counterculture youth, according to Entertainment Weekly, which first reported the casting. (Now we know where Alicia’s brother, Owen, gets his free spirit!) Alicia’s mom, and her many marriages, have been referred to often on the show, but she has never been seen on the CBS drama — until now.
Although The Good Wife has always been known for its impressive guest-starring roster, co-creator and executive producer Robert King floated the idea of casting a lesser-known actress in the pivotal part back in 2011. “We’re torn on that because we don’t want to do the stunt casting for the mom. If we did do it, it might be in the realm of not some high-profile actress, but someone who is very real,” King told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s Winter preview sessions. But, obviously that was before the former (TV) First Lady came along.
Channing is best known for her work as fictional FLOTUS Abbey Bartlet on The West Wing, as well as playing Pink Lady Rizzo in Grease.
Here’s hoping Channing gets to share some face time opposite Alicia’s insufferable, manipulative mother-in-law Jackie (Mary Beth Peil) when she guest-stars.
The Good Wife‘s new season premieres Sunday at 9/8c on CBS.
